Instagram is the one social network that favours square photos, or 1:1 ratio.
Does the user have to always share square photos on Instagram? Being that Instagram itself displays square photos better and its interface requires so, every other photo which size and dimension is bigger than square will be cropped. The ideal square photos must have a size of 1080px by 1080px, but Instagram will display them as 600px by 600px.
There are many landscape photos that we’re used to see on Instagram as well. The recommended aspect ratio is 1.91:1.
But, what about portrait photos? We love Unsplash and its endless range of amazing photos, some of which are vertical. Instagram only allows a ratio of 4:5. If the photo is longer (or wider) it will be automatically cropped.
Also, the video ratios on Instagram must be 1:1 and their size 1080px by 1080px. The same things as per the photos will happen if a user wants to share a vertical video (ratio should be 4:5) and its size must be 1080px by 1350px).
IGTV videos are shot vertically or horizontally. The vertical one can have a maximum aspect ratio of 9:16 and a minimum of 4:5.
While, the horizontal one can have a maximum ratio of 16:9 and a minimum of 5:4.
The recommended size for IGTV cover photos is 420px by 654px (or 1:1.55 ratio), and you can’t edit it once you’ve uploaded and shared the video.
