Before jumping into a more detailed walkthrough, we’d love to explain each respective feature/social network first.
Reels is an Instagram feature that provides video options like speed, effects, filters, music, etc. People love short-form videos that contain tons of information as well. They last 15-30 seconds and even though they’re new to the social media world, they’re actually trending.
TikTok is a new social network that has gained a huge audience, compared to other networks, time-wise. They are a huge opportunity to showcase a new product, service, tip and what’s most important, its explore page is always relevant!
Both Reels and TikTok are trending and people are loving the fast ways to get encouraged and motivated. They both are entertaining and everyone can become part of them as they’re easy to use and contain tons of options.
There are in fact some differences and advantages towards the users or creators.
Here’s a list of 5 Advantages: Instagram Reels vs TikTok
- Music options
People that are currently using TikTok know quite well that putting any type of music on their videos makes them happy and successful. On the other hand, Instagram is not very generous when it comes to music. They indeed care about the owner’s copyrights and whenever you’re trying to save a reel on your mobile, consider the music gone for good – but, there’s no watermark. And you can only save your Reels, not others’. TikTok allows you to save other TikToks as well, but they will also contain the watermark, the username.
This is why TikTok gains more points when it comes to the music options. They allow using a variety of music content they contain in their library, and also, they help filter videos by music. This is how you know you can be a step ahead on becoming part of the trend.
We’ve also tried a famous song that everybody is creating TikToks with by also writing: ‘TikTok is broke. Use this sound. No hashtags. Boom – you’re famous.’
PS: We didn’t become famous.
- You can find more filters on TikTok than on Reels
We know Reels are simply a smart clone of TikTok. But yet, they haven’t rolled out everything that TikTok provides.
TikTok has a very wide variety of options when it comes to adding effects, filters, and collaborating with other users.
Instagram Reels only contain: length (15-30 sec), speed (up to 5x), very few effects, etc.
While TikTok provides a wide range of effects that are trending, new, green screen, beauty, special effects, editing, selfies, interactive, futuristic, moods, face morphing – while some of them can help split-screen and create TikToks with other users.
- The algorithm changes
Both Instagram and TikTok care about the algorithm, a lot. But, when it comes to TikTok, they provide a more detailed explanation and overview.
On TikTok, the For You feed reflects preferences unique to each user. The system recommends content by ranking videos based on a combination of factors – starting from interests you express as a new user and adjusting for things you indicate you’re not interested in, too – to form your personalized For You feed.
Recommendations are based on a number of factors, including things like:
- User interactions such as the videos you like or share, accounts you follow, comments you post, and content you create.
- Video information, which might include details like captions, sounds, and hashtags.
- Device and account settings like your language preference, country setting, and device type. These factors are included to make sure the system is optimized for performance, but they receive lower weight in the recommendation system relative to other data points we measure since users don’t actively express these as preferences.
Unlike TikTok, Instagram Reels have another statement:
You’ll also see some reels with a “Featured” label. If your reel is featured in Explore, you’ll receive a notification. Featured reels are a selection of public reels chosen by Instagram to help you discover original content we hope will entertain and inspire you.
Both Instagram Reels and TikTok don’t have advanced features when it comes to ads and sponsored posts. They both suggest takeovers, brand collaborations, and branded hashtags.
Every professional account on TikTok has real-time access to viewing analytics. This is one of the most powerful advantages of TikTok as creators can check their audience and can literally target it easily.
While Instagram Reels doesn’t provide insight tracking yet.
